Flow State makes everyone happy. Wanna know why?
About Flow State
Flow State describes the feeling when we‘re in the zone, in the tunnel - when you feel like Alice in Wonderland.
Then time becomes a thing of the past because we‘re fully present in the moment. Then we‘re completely involved in our activity.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi wrote a book about flow-state.
He interviewed xxx people and found out that flow makes us not only hyper productive and creative but also super happy.
When I work in #Flow-State (like when writing this post) I forget time and I just have fun.
Usually, I think a lot.
Sometimes, I think about important things like
- Will me going vegan save the world?
- How many refugees could I host in my apartment?
- Could Mark Zuckerberg read my messages if he wants to?
Sometimes, I think about less important things like
- Yesterday, 2 people unfollowed me - should I uninstall Instagram?
- Should I use Emojis, text smileys or no smileys at all?
- Are super likes really worth the money?
All my thoughts stop when I’m deep down into something. When I find flow.
Why Flow State makes happy
It’s even better: Brain scientists found out that the xxx area of the brain stops working when we‘re in Flow State. That’s the section in our brain that’s responsible for worrying and wandering.
Here you can hear Sarah talking about it:
Mihaly says we find flow when we’re in an environment with little interruptions. He also says it’s easier when we can define our schedule.
Flow-state? Little interruptions? Self-defined schedule? Maybe I should invite Mihaly into my office.
“Welcome to reality, Mihaly” I’d say.
I don’t know how to find flow-state in an open office. And yes, I’m wearing noise canceling headphones.
I don’t know what’s actually worse. When the intern slowly starts watching me to check if he can ask a question. And then finally asks the question. Or when he sends me a Slack Direct Message.
Boom. In your face.
Goodbye flow-state. It was nice seeing you again. It’s been a while.
“And everywhere I go I’m hearing motherfuckers trying to steal my flow” Snoop Dogg
Do you know that it takes 21 minutes to refocus after someone interrupted you? I don’t remember the last time I had 21 minutes to focus on something. Maybe in the restroom.
When we‘re in Flow State we don‘t think about all the things we messed up in the past and feel over-whelmed by all the things we want to accomplish in the future.
We’re just present. So it’s a little bit like meditation.. I think.. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I think Flow State is a beautiful thing. What about you?
